The Illawarra Steelers defeated Newcastle 22-16 in Round 7 of the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership in Newcastle on Saturday afternoon. The six-point victory ensured the Steelers hold down outright second on the ladder with four rounds remaining in the regular season.

The hosts were first to cross the stripe after a scoreless first 20 minutes. However, a try to Sienna Yeo (main picture) in the 31st minute gave the Steelers a 6-4 lead at the break.
A Herewaka Pohatu try extended the visitor’s lead to 10-4 before the Knights hit back to level in the scores. A Kaarla Cowen barge-over try in the 55th minute gave the Steelers a six-point advantage, but the Knights responded five minutes later to even the scores again.
With the game evenly poised at 16-all with 10 minutes remaining, hardworking prop Mackenzie Lear sealed the Steelers’ victory in the 69th minute.
