Illawarra Rugby League is proud to announce the appointment of Brad Hughes as the Head of Football, effective immediately. With an impressive background in education, including most recently as Principal at Warrawong High, and extensive experience in rugby league, Hughes is well-equipped to lead the league’s football programs into a new era.
Hughes’ journey in education includes a notable tenure as Deputy Principal at Illawarra Sports High, where he played a key role in developing young talent and fostering a culture of excellence. In addition to his educational experience, Brad has a strong history in rugby league, having coached the Illawarra Steelers pathways teams and coaching coordinator at Collegians JRLFC.
As a former player, Hughes represented the Western Suburbs Magpies, making 15 first-grade appearances between 1993 and 1996, and the Illawarra Steelers from 1997-1999. His transition from player to coach has equipped him with a unique perspective on the game, making him a perfect fit to oversee the football operations in the Illawarra region.
“I am excited to continue building on the impact we have already made in promoting Rugby League as the sport of choice. My goal is to foster positive relationships with all stakeholders to enhance participation in Rugby League and its associated pathways,” said Hughes.
Rowen Cole, General Manager of the Steelers, welcomed Hughes to the role, stating, “We are excited to have Brad take the lead as Head of Football for Illawarra Rugby League. His rich background in education and rugby league, combined with his passion for developing young talent, makes him an excellent choice. We look forward to the fresh ideas and leadership he will bring to our league and see great potential in his vision for the future.”
In his new role, Hughes will focus on enhancing the development pathways for players, strengthening community engagement, and driving competitive standards within the Illawarra Rugby League.
