Rising Stars: Tahanni Kaufusi and Mason Andrews Ready To Lead By Example

As the 2025 NSWRL Junior Representative season approaches, the Illawarra Steelers are gearing up for another exciting year, and among the standout players to watch are two 16-year-olds with big dreams and even bigger work ethics.

Tahanni Kaufusi, a powerful front-row forward, and Mason Andrews, a tenacious lock, are not just rising stars — they are set to play key roles in the Steelers push for success in the Lisa Fiaola and Harold Mathews Cup competitions.

With standout campaigns behind them last season while playing under-age, they are ready to make an impact on the field and step into leadership roles.

Tahanni Kaufusi: Building confidence and a strong foundation

For Tahanni Kaufusi, 2024 was a year of growth and learning. Playing in the Lisa Fiaola Cup as a 15-year-old forward was no easy task, especially given the physicality and intensity of the competition. But Kaufusi embraces the challenge.

“The toughest thing last year was coming in as a younger forward. I was smaller than most of the girls, but it did wonders for me,” Kaufusi said.

“The league is growing every year, and being the younger, smaller girl gave me confidence that I could handle myself. It was a good learning experience, and I’ll build on that for this season.”

Despite being one of the youngest players, Kaufusi’s determination in the forward pack set the tone for what looks to be a promising future in the sport. Her progress was influenced by more than just the game’s physical demands; she also had the chance to train with the Steelers’ Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership-winning squad.

“It was a great experience,” she said.

“I’m grateful that the coaches saw potential in me to take part in the preseason training squad. It was a next-level experience.”

“The fitness drills were tougher than I expected, but it was great to get that intensity early. The girls in that squad, like Shae (Muhliesen) and Mackenzie (Lear), are real standouts.”

“They train hard and push me to be better.”

Training alongside seasoned players like Muhliesen and Lear gave Kaufusi a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed at the highest level. But she also knows that it’s about more than just individual performance — it’s about the team’s collective effort.

With the 2025 season in sight, Kaufusi is now turning her focus toward leadership. While she’s still growing as a player, her experience last year and her ability to adapt have helped her step into a leadership role within the squad.

“This year, I want to be a leader for the girls. I want them to feel comfortable coming to me with any issues. It’s about being someone they can trust,” she said.

“On the field, I want to continue working on my fitness and consistency. Every forward wants to get fitter, and that’s something I’m focusing on for 2025.”

The young forward is confident in the Steelers potential for the new season, and she’s ready to be a driving force for the team.

“Good luck to all the teams, but watch out for us. The Steelers are coming strong and ready to compete.”

Mason Andrews: Unlocking the secrets to a winning edge

The 16-year-old has already demonstrated an impressive work ethic, on and off the ball. The hard-working lock forward, a standout in the Steelers Harold Matthews Cup side last season, took the time to reflect on his journey, mindset, and goals for the upcoming season.

Despite winning only three out of eight games last season, the Kiama Knights junior believes there were still many lessons to learn from the experience.

“I think we finally put all the pieces together when we played the Dragons (in Round 7),” he said with a quiet pride.

“We ended up winning that game (28-4). It was because we trusted each other. We worked for each other, and the results spoke for themselves.”

Andrews says his focus on teamwork isn’t just about winning; it’s about building a culture where everyone supports one another.

“It’s not like a singular-player sport. It’s a team sport. We do it for each other,” he reflects.

This mindset has shaped his entire approach to the game and is the driving force behind his constant push to improve.

Looking ahead to his second year in the Under 17’s, Andrews is committed to taking his game to the next level.

“I’ve been focused on improving my work ethic,” he said.

“It’s all about working for my teammates and doing what I can to help the team win. I just love winning. That’s what it’s all about.”

The Steelers take on the Canberra Raiders in pre-season trials at Robert Ziems Park, Corrimal this Saturday, 11 January.
