Devils v Collies: A showdown like no other

A MOJO Homes Illawarra Cup grand final rematch three years in the making will be played this Sunday, with Western Suburbs Devils taking on Collegians at WIN Stadium.

These two teams contested the last grand final in 2019, with Collies coming out 16-14 victors over their old rivals. The teams have faced off twice this season, with Collegians winning both encounters. However, Wests have won five of their last six matches and will be primed for this battle.

Wests have also had an extra week to prepare for the match after beating minor-premiers Thirroul in the major semi-final. In contrast, Collies have come into the grand final with solid momentum on the back of two wins in sudden-death games against De La Salle and Thirroul.

Speaking ahead of the grand final, Collegians lock Blake Phillips praised his team’s recent performances and preparation coming into the weekend.

“It’s done a lot for our confidence. We hit a bit of a rough patch at the back end of the comp games, so I think more footy has kind of helped us with our confidence and building a bit of momentum coming into Sunday,” Phillips said.

“The whole group at training has had a lot more energy. There’s a few guys who are a bit banged up, but for the grand final, they’ll find a way to be fit and get their bodies right for it.”

Devils peaking

Devils prop Luke Chalker will play in his first grand final with the Club on the weekend and says their playing group is full of energy heading into the clash.

“This week we’ve ramped it up at training, and I feel like we’re peaking right, so we should be at our best on Sunday,” Chalker said.

“It’s going to be a battle of the forwards, and with my role in the front row, I know we’re going to have to get out there and be physical and make a difference. Whichever team is rolling in the forwards, I feel, will probably have the edge to win.”

Both players also thanked their fans for their support during the year, encouraging supporters to attend what is shaping up to be a show-stopping grand final.

“Get your Father’s Day activities done in the morning and get your red and black on and get down here at 3 o’clock and support Collies on the weekend,” Phillips said.

“Anyone who wants to come down, get your gear on and come down and support us. It means the world. I know it spurs us on seeing a crowd here, so I’d love to see a big crowd in,” Chalker added.
