Cougars breakthrough win, minor premiership up for grabs

De La Salle recorded their fifth win in a row in defeating last year’s premiers 24-6, announcing themselves as Premiership favourites, having beaten all contenders in the previous five weeks. Meanwhile, after going winless for two seasons, Corrimal got a much-deserved win over Dapto.

Despite the top four being decided their is still much to play for in the final round of the Mojo Homes Illawarra Cup with two points separating the top three teams.

De La Salle moved to the top of the ladder with their comprehensive 18-point win over Collegians at Captain Cook Oval. The Shire-based outfit can secure the minor premiership with a win over Corrimal next week.

The Cougars caused the upset of the penultimate round with a 36-18 win over Dapto. The Canaries needed to win to give themselves one last shot at a finals berth against Thirroul in the final round. However, the Cougars had other ideas, scoring six tries to four to claim their first win since June 2021.

Wests prepared for their final-round blockbuster against Collegians with an 18-10 win over Thirroul in a physical encounter. Last year’s grand final opponents will meet at Collegians on Saturday. The reward for the winner is a top-two finish and the possibility of minor premiers if the Cougars can repeat last week’s heroics with a win over De La Salle.

Despite their eight-point loss, and even if they lose their final round match-up with the Canaries, Thirroul have secured fourth spot courtesy of a superior for and against differential.
