With two wins and two losses from their opening four matches, including last week’s 16–12 victory over Corrimal, Thirroul now faces an undefeated Collegians outfit on Saturday, who sit at the top of the Harrigan Cup table.
Head coach Jarrod Costello says the group is looking forward to the clash, but knows improvement is needed.
“Our season’s been a bit indifferent — two wins and two losses — so we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Costello said.
“But we need to improve a lot on what we’ve done in the last few games to be able to get the win on Saturday.”
While a few players remain sidelined, Costello says the squad is in a strong position heading into the weekend.
“We’ve got a couple of players still coming back from injury, but we’re reasonably strong this weekend. We’re still waiting on Kristian Williams to return,” he said.
Bremner boost for Butchers
The Butchers have been boosted by the return of two-time premiership winner Wayne Bremner (pictured) who has come out of retirement, after a year-long hiatus.
Ironically, Bremner’s last top grade game for the Butchers was against Collies in their 24-18 grand final triumph in 2023.
Playing injured Bremner, hobbled his way through the pain barrier, coming up with some big plays in key moments to seal an historic win for the club.
“We’re also happy to have Wayne back — he was our fullback in 2022 and 2023. He didn’t play last year, but he’s back to finish the season with us, which is a big boost,” Costello said.
While injuries haven’t derailed their campaign, Costello believes discipline and ball control have been their biggest issues.
“Injuries haven’t really directed the season — we just haven’t played as well,” he said.
“Our penalty rate’s been way too high, we’ve made a lot of errors, and we’ve lacked discipline at times. That’s what’s hurt us, especially last week.”
Francis on the Boyle
Following the retirement of four-time premiership-winning five-eighth Jarrod Boyle last year, the Butchers have turned to Mitchell Francis to fill the void.
“Mitch has done a really good job. He’s played three out of the four games,” Costello said.
“He was playing overseas in France and missed last year through injury, so he’s still finding his feet — but he had some great touches last week.”
With several experienced players stepping into leadership roles, Costello says he’s been pleased with the guidance provided to younger squad members.
“Luke Gallagher’s been great. He’s come to the club and really led the way,” he said.
“Brad’s (Dietz) also been strong. Our senior, more experienced players have played really well to start the season and they’re complementing the young guys nicely.”

Young guns stepping up
Costello says the blend of youth and experience is working well across the club.
“It helps having the senior players step up. They’ve got good experience and that makes a big difference when younger guys come in,” he said.
“But the young guys are really good players in their own right — they’ve handled it well.”
Costello knows his side will need to be at their best against Collegians, who have set the pace early in the season.
“They’ve played really well — they’ve got a strong middle with the Dowel brothers and Blake Phillips, their captain,” he said.
“He provides a lot of leadership. They’ve had a great start and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
Focused and united
Despite a few inconsistent performances, Costello is enjoying the journey and believes the group is building nicely.
“I’m really enjoying coaching this group and working with the players. It’s a great competition and we’ve got a good opportunity ahead of us.”
He says morale is strong across all grades at the club.
“There’s a good vibe around the group. The boys know where we fell short last week and they’re determined to be better this weekend,” he said.
“Our under-18s are going well, our reserve grade had a good win on the weekend, and the first-grade boys are sticking together. So, the club’s in a good place.”
