Steelers Endure Mixed Fortunes in Junior Reps

The Illawarra Steelers experienced a rollercoaster weekend in NSWRL Junior Representative fixtures, celebrating a Harold Matthews Cup victory and a Laurie Daley Cup semi-final berth, but heartbreak across several other grades in tightly contested matches.

While the Harold Matthews side finished on top, late comebacks and second-half surges from opponents proved costly across other fixtures, with several games decided in the closing stages.

Lisa Fiaola Cup – Sharks Storm Past Steelers in Second Half

The Steelers Lisa Fiaola Cup side was defeated 40-10 by the Cronulla Sharks in Round 5 action on Saturday at Cronulla High School.

Cronulla struck first in just the second minute before Jesse Rayner responded five minutes later to level the scores.

The two teams continued to trade tries through the first half, with the Sharks holding a narrow 12-10 lead after 25 minutes – an advantage they carried into the halftime break.

However, the second half belonged to the hosts, who crossed for five unanswered tries to shut down any Steelers momentum and run away with the result.

Tarsha Gale Cup – Late Sharks Comeback Breaks Steelers Hearts

A first-half double to Ally Hamilton had the Steelers in a commanding early position in their Tarsha Gale Cup clash.

Hamilton crossed twice inside the opening 15 minutes to give the Steelers a 10-0 lead in a physical and evenly matched contest.

The hosts were first to strike after the break, narrowing the margin to 10-6 five minutes into the second half.

Steelers captain Kiara Kostovski responded shortly after, pushing the visitors out to a 14-6 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

But Cronulla mounted a late comeback, scoring in the 50th minute before crossing again in the dying stages to snatch a dramatic 18-14 victory.

Andrew Johns Cup – Tigers Produce Second Half Fightback

With their semifinal hopes on the line in the NSWRL Regional Representative competition, the Steelers burst out of the gates in their final round Andrew Johns Cup clash at Collegians Sporting Complex on Saturday, surging to a commanding 18-0 lead after three converted tries in the first 10 minutes.

Macarthur Wests Tigers halted the early momentum with a try in the 18th minute, but the Steelers responded through Adam Sherlock to take a 24-6 lead into halftime.

Despite dominating the opening half, the momentum shifted dramatically after the break as the Tigers piled on four unanswered tries to claim a 30-24 victory.

The result marked the Steelers’ final match of the Andrew Johns Cup season.

Laurie Daley Cup – Steelers Clinch Finals Spot Despite Loss

The ISC Steelers were defeated 40-8 by the Macarthur Wests Tigers at Collegians.

Steelers fullback Jarrah Thomas opened the scoring in the ninth minute to give his side a 4-0 lead.

The Tigers responded strongly, crossing twice in a 10-minute period to establish a 10-4 advantage at halftime.

The visitors took control in the second half, scoring five unanswered tries before the Steelers added a late consolation.

Despite the loss, the Steelers now shift their attention to next week’s knockout semi-final after securing second place in the Southern Conference. Their opponents will be the Northern Rivers Titans, who finished atop the Northern Conference.

Harold Matthews Cup – Steelers Finish With Gritty Victory

The Steelers Harold Matthews Cup side consolidated sixth spot on the ladder with an impressive 30-22 home victory after withstanding a spirited comeback from the Western Suburbs Magpies.

Illawarra dominated the opening 20 minutes, crossing for three unanswered tries and adding a penalty goal to build a commanding 20-0 lead.

However, momentum shifted to a 12-man Magpies outfit when centre Monson Hopoate was sent off, and the Magpies scored twice to close the gap to 20-10 by halftime.

Western Suburbs continued their charge after the break, scoring first to narrow the margin to 20-16 before an intercept try in the 40th minute gave them an unlikely 22-20 lead.

The Steelers responded through captain Api Amone, who finished off a powerful forward surge to reclaim the lead at 26-22 with 15 minutes remaining.

Steelers winger Preston Sager sealed the victory soon after, finishing in the corner following an attacking raid on the last tackle to secure a match-winning 30-22 lead with 10 minutes remaining.

SG Ball Cup – Late Magpies Try Denies Steelers

The Steelers SG Ball side suffered another heartbreaking defeat, falling 22-18 to the Western Suburbs Magpies after a last-minute comeback.

The Magpies opened strongly, scoring two tries in a five-minute burst to lead 10-0 after the opening quarter.

Following a lengthy lightning delay and heavy rain, the Steelers responded through Beau Baldock to reduce the deficit to 10-6 at halftime.

Momentum continued to swing in Illawarra’s favour after the break when Sonny McGregor crossed to give the Steelers a 12-10 lead.

Marley McLaren extended the advantage to 18-10 with 20 minutes remaining, putting the Steelers in a strong position to secure their first win of the season.

However, the Magpies mounted a late surge, with James Landon converting his own try before Western Suburbs crossed again with just two minutes remaining to seal a 22-18 victory.
