The Illawarra Steelers have experienced back-to-back losses for the first time this season after being defeated 18-14 by the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Round 9 of the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership on Sunday at Collegians Sporting Complex.

Looking to bounce back from their Round 8 loss to the Knights, the Steelers struck first, with winger Ella Churchill crossing for the opening try in the 12th minute.
The Rabbitohs responded quickly, with back-to-back tries to second-rower Abbie Ritchie in the 18th minute and winger Shanelle Lyons in the 24th minute, to take an 8-4 lead.
However, the Steelers equalised just before halftime as Churchill secured her second try of the match, sending the teams into the break locked at 8–8.

The Rabbitohs regained momentum early in the second half, with Ritchie bagging her second try of the afternoon. Five-eighth Luisa Yaranamua extended their lead in the 44th minute, with Kiara McGregor converting to make it 18–8.
Steelers hit back in the 52nd minute when second-rower Tahlia O’Brien scored after chasing down a clearing kick from Maddie Studdon, the halfback’s conversion narrowing the margin to four points.
Despite a late surge from the Steelers, the Rabbitohs defensive line held firm.
The loss leaves the Steelers tied for fourth place with the Mounties and the Eels, needing to win their remaining two regular season games to secure a spot in the Finals.
