Corrimal has confirmed its status as a genuine Harrigan Cup premiership contender, extending its winning streak to three matches with an emphatic 40-10 victory over Collegians on Saturday.
The Cougars have now claimed back-to-back victories over last season’s grand finalists, underlining their rapid rise after also toppling defending premiers Wests in the previous round.
Corrimal dominated from the opening whistle, crossing for four unanswered tries to race to a commanding 24-0 halftime lead and leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb.
The home side maintained the pressure after the break, with winger Saifiti Saifiti finishing with a double while also producing an outstanding display with the boot, landing six conversions from seven attempts.
Collegians finally opened their account shortly after the hour mark and added a late consolation try, but the result was never in doubt as the Cougars completed a comprehensive 40-10 triumph.
Canaries Upset Butchers
At Thomas Gibson Park, Dapto produced the upset of the round, knocking off competition leaders Thirroul 26-16.
The Canaries crossed for five tries to three in a spirited performance that keeps them firmly in the race for a top-three finish, while handing the Butchers their third defeat of the season.
On Sunday, the Wests Devils bounced back in emphatic fashion, overpowering Sutherland-Loftus 48-14 at Sutherland Oval.
The defending premiers laid the platform with a devastating first-half display, running in six tries to establish a commanding 36-0 halftime advantage.
Sutherland-Loftus responded with a much-improved second-half performance, restricting the Devils to just two further tries while crossing for three of their own, but the damage had already been done as Wests completed a convincing 34-point victory.
The competition will pause for a general bye next week, though Collegians and Dapto are set to meet in their rescheduled Round 5 wash-out fixture.
Lower Grades
The Cougars scored a 34-18 win over the Collegians to climb into third place on the Harrigan Plate ladder. Helensburgh kept the upsets coming, toppling defending premiers Wests 38-12. Thirroul received a forfeit from Dapto, who have withdrawn from the remainder of the competition.
The Harrigan Shield double-header at Jim Allen Oval produced more drama, with Mt Kembla stunning Berkeley 32-12. Norths then edged out Figtree 14-6, preserving their place at the top of the ladder, just one point ahead of the Eagles.
At Dandaloo, the Avondale Greyhounds cruised past Windang 56-6 in the early game before the Wombats powered to a 36-8 victory over Corrimal.
As a result, the Wombats take outright third, sitting two points behind the Eagles. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds and Crushers are neck-and-neck in the race for fourth, with the Lowries only a point behind in sixth.
