Canaries Take Down Cougars

Dapto has defeated Corrimal 36-22 in their entertaining Harrigan Cup fixture at Ziems Park on Saturday.

Canaries winger Christopher Ravarua scored two of his sides six tries while captain Troy Peiper had a perfect day with the boot landing six conversions from six attempts.

The Canaries posted the first two tries to get a 12-0 jump on their hosts before Corrimal wingers Joel Kingham and Saifiti Saifiti scored on either side for the Cougars to level the score in the 30th minute.

The Canaries raced to a 30-12 lead scoring either side of the break and again in the 46th minute.

Capitalising on error by the Canaries on their own line the Cougars pounced on a loss ball and scored in the ensuing set to get back into the game at 30-18 with 30 minutes remaining.

Ravarua barged over for his second try to take the game beyond Corrimal’s reach but the Cougars never gave up the fight scoring the last try with Saifiti’s second off a smart right edge play.

De La Delight Locals With Big Win Over Butchers

De La Salle began their Harrigan Cup campaign with a convincing 30-12 victory over the Thirroul Butchers at Captain Cook Oval on Saturday.

The home team scored three unanswered tries in the first half, leading 18-0 at halftime.

Last year’s minor premiers continued their strong performance in the second half, adding two more tries to extend their lead to 30-0 by the 60-minute mark.

The Butchers finally got on the scoreboard in the last 20 minutes with two tries, reducing the margin to 18 points, but the damage had already been done.

Collegians Steal Late Win Over Wests In Season Opener

The Harrigan Cup season began on Thursday evening at the Collegians Sporting Complex with an exciting opener between the defending champions, Wests, and the hosts, Collegians.

In a thrilling match, Collegians fullback Callum Gromek managed to score a crucial try in the 79th minute, securing a 28-26 victory over the defending champions.

Both teams scored five tries and successfully converted three each in the wet conditions, but a penalty goal from Damon New was ultimately the difference in the match…and ‘that’ Gromek try at the death.
