Wests Get It Done In Grind

Wests ground out a solid 20–10 victory over the Thirroul Butchers at Thomas Gibson Park. The Devils led Thirroul 14-0 at halftime in an often fiery encounter in front of a large and vocal home crowd, scoring three first-half tries through wingers Colby Pellow (main picture), Jy Hitchcox, and fullback Lachlan Hurst.

The Butchers had the better of possession and field position early in the second stanza, but the Devil’s defence remained intact, holding the Butchers up over the line on several occasions.

Wests finally cracked in the 68th minute with Butchers centre Bryan Rutledge slicing through the Devils left edge defence to put his winger Zane Bijorac in the corner right in front of the Gibbo Park faithful.

Rutledge was at it again moments later, setting up his fullback Dane Courtney, who had loomed up in support. Mitchell Francis added the extras, bringing the hosts and the vocal home crowd right back into the contest at 14-10 with ten minutes remaining.

However, the experienced Tautau Moga thwarted Thirroul’s comeback, crashing over in in the 77th minute to seal victory for the defending premiers. Halfback Dane Chisholm added the two points to finish with two conversions from four attempts.
