Kirk Standing Tall For Harold Matts

The Steelers Harold Matthews Cup team have made a bright start to the 2023 season, having recorded three wins in their first four matches. They currently sit just outside the top six, and have the bye this weekend before firing up for their last four matches of the season.

Towering 195cm fullback Tom Kirk is into his second year representing the Steelers at Under 17 level, and has relished the opportunity to be an experienced hand within the group.

“I’ve just been trying to be a leader as much as I can, trying to push the boys to perform their best and help them out as much as I can,” Kirk says.

Coming off their recent win against the Sydney Roosters in Wyong, Kirk heaped praise on his teammates for their efforts in the 24-16 win.

“Defensively I thought we were very good in the first half. We came out strong, muscled up against their big boys, and just really defended well so that defence could turn into attack.”

Kirk ran away for the winning try of the match, showing his speed despite it being in the final minutes of the game.

“It was the icing on the cake, we were up by two at that point, and to score that with two minutes to go really made it special.”

Should their winning form continue, Tom and his teammates will be shooting for finals successes at the business end of the season.
