In the fast-paced world of rugby league, where resilience, strong work ethic, and skillful evasion are key qualities for success, Charlotte Nicolson embodies them all.
The 16-year-old goal-kicking second-rower is making a swift impact in her first season for the Illawarra Steelers with three tries and 13 goals in just seven appearances.
Her journey is far from ordinary, balancing training, games, and study while enduring a six-hour round-trip commute from Canberra each week. Her unwavering commitment has made her a standout player and a true inspiration.
From Canberra to the Steelers
Nicolson’s rugby league journey began when she was just 12 years old, playing for the Queanbeyan Roos in the under-15s competition in Canberra.
From there, she moved on to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. She later immersed herself in rugby union, representing Daramalan College and the ACT Brumbies. Her versatility across both codes helped shape her into the energetic player she is today.
“I’ve been in cross codes for a couple of years now and really enjoying it,” Nicolson said.
“I played schoolgirls and Brumbies for Canberra, but when the opportunity with the Steelers came up, I had to take it.”
Nicolson’s move to the Steelers was not just a sporting decision but a family-backed endeavour.
“We got a message from Stacey [Steelers Pathway Manager], and my dad said, ‘Look, we’ll give it a go.’
“I hadn’t had much luck in Canberra, so we wanted to branch out for different opportunities.”
Her parents’ sacrifices have been immense, with her father frequently driving her to training and games and leaving work early to ensure she never misses a session.
“My twin sister and younger sister back home, along with my mum, have all sacrificed a lot to support me,” she says with gratitude.
Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead
Despite her promising career trajectory, Nicolson has faced her share of setbacks. A broken collarbone last year temporarily derailed her progress, but she remained undeterred.
Returning stronger than ever, she embraced the opportunity with the Steelers and has been on the road three times a week since then.
The Steelers’ campaign has been challenging, with the team needing a crucial victory in their final game this weekend against the Central Coast Roosters to secure a top-eight spot.
Reflecting on last week’s 20-0 loss to Parramatta, Nicolson emphasises the importance of possession and composure.
“We held strong for the first 50 minutes, but unfortunately, they scored a couple of tries off our mistakes. We need to hold the ball more and complete our sets,” she explains.
With a must-win match ahead, Nicolson remains optimistic.
“It’s crucial that we use our voices, play eyes-up footy, and stay connected as a team. If we do that, we can get the result we need.”
Balancing Passion and Family Support
Despite her demanding schedule, Nicolson finds joy in the routine of travelling with her father.
“I usually get some homework done, talk to my dad about footy, and even squeeze in a bit of sleep,” she laughs.
Her commitment has also inspired her younger sister, Emily, 12, who dreams of following in her footsteps.
“She says she wants to be just like me when she’s older,” Nicolson says proudly.
Her family’s unwavering support has played a crucial role in her journey.
“My parents have done so much for me, and I don’t take that for granted. Their sacrifices push me to work even harder.”
What’s Next?
When the season concludes, Nicolson plans to continue her rugby career with Erindale College in the Schoolgirls Cup while also playing rugby union for her local team in Canberra.
But for now, her focus remains firmly on making the most of her time with the Steelers.
“Hopefully, we get the win so I can keep training with this group of girls a little longer,” she says.
As for her long-term aspirations, Nicolson remains open to where her talent and dedication will take her.
“I just want to keep improving and taking every opportunity that comes my way. Whether it’s league or union, I love the game and want to push myself as far as I can go.”
With talent, determination, and an unbreakable support system, Charlotte Nicolson is poised for great things.
No matter where the road takes her, she’s ready to embrace every challenge head-on—just as she has from the beginning.
