Day of Steel Delivers as Steelers Claim Four Wins

The Illawarra Steelers celebrated a successful ‘Day of Steel’ at WIN Stadium on Saturday, claiming four wins from six matches in a marathon showcase of the region’s rugby league talent.

The club’s female pathways set the tone early, with both the Lisa Fiaola Cup Under 17s and Tarsha Gale Cup Under 19s recording commanding victories over the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.

Proceedings began in warm conditions in Wollongong with the Lisa Fiaola side crossing for five tries in a 24-6 triumph over the Sea Eagles. The Steelers controlled the contest from the outset, defending strongly and capitalising on their opportunities to secure their first win of the season and an impressive start to the day.

The Tarsha Gale Cup team followed suit with a dominant 34-6 win. In a polished all-round performance, the Steelers piled on seven tries while producing a resolute defensive display that kept Manly scoreless until the final 10 minutes, when the visitors grabbed a late consolation.

The Andrew Johns Cup, the ISC Steelers Under 16s produced the fightback of the day but fell heartbreakingly short, going down 28-24 to Monaro.

Trailing 22-4 at half time and 28-4 with 20 minutes remaining, the Steelers mounted a stirring comeback sparked by tries to Eugene Olive and a clever solo effort from dummy half Ari Smith. Olive Griffiths and Levi Schuster added further tries as the deficit narrowed dramatically, but time proved the visitors’ ally.

In Laurie Daley Cup action, the Under 18s made it three consecutive victories with a 44-16 win over Monaro.

After conceding a try in the fifth minute to trail 6-0 early, the hosts responded through Taj Barret and William Tan to wrestle back momentum. Monaro briefly levelled the scores before captain Sonny Jamieson restored the advantage, handing the Steelers an 18-12 halftime lead.

Jarrah Howland made an immediate impact after the break, extending the lead before Jaxon Ballinger sprinted over out wide as the home side pulled away.

The Steelers maintained their momentum throughout the second half, adding three more tries to seal a commanding victory and continue their impressive run of form.

In Harold Matthews Cup action, Destin Tausala scored his third try in two weeks to hand the home side the perfect 6-0 start. The Sea Eagles levelled in the 15th minute before Ryland Coelho converted his own try, and a converted four-pointer to Oliver Burton gave the Steelers a handy 18-6 lead at halftime.

In a tightly contested second half, Manly crossed in the 49th minute to reduce the margin to six points, but the Steelers’ defence stood firm to secure their third straight victory.

In the final fixture of the day, the SG Ball Under 19s were outplayed 26-10 by the Sea Eagles, bringing the curtain down on an outstanding showcase of junior talent.

The Steelers battled strongly against Manly in the opening half hour, taking a 6-4 lead thanks to a Jack Talbot four-pointer before trailing 8-6 at halftime.

Manly surged ahead early in the second half, posting two converted tries in five minutes to push the margin to 20-6. Refusing to back down, the Steelers hit back with a Kye Lynch try off a Luke Butler cross-field kick, narrowing the gap to 10 points with 20 minutes left.

However, the comeback was short-lived as Manly sealed the result with a match-winning try five minutes later.
