In an enthralling first half, the Rabbitohs came out firing, crossing for a converted try to Dennishely Taukafa in the 3rd minute, adding a penalty goal shortly after to take an early 8-0 lead.
The Steelers responded, shifting the momentum with a try in the 17th minute to makeshift fullback Asher Chapman, filling in for the injured Oliver Burton before ball-playing lock Halaapiapi Amone gave the Steelers a 10-8 lead at the break.
The minor premiers carried that momentum into the second half, striking early to take a 14–8 lead after winger Sonny Goulder found himself on the end of a pass from skipper Creighton Meafou to score in the corner.
The two teams exchanged sets before the Rabbitohs gained the advantage, scoring two tries in the final 10 minutes to secure victory and end the Steelers title hopes.
Despite the loss, the Steelers can hold their heads high after an impressive regular season that included seven wins and one loss, finishing at the top of the table.
