The Illawarra Steelers SG Ball outfit showcased a number of standout players in their 24-12 victory over the Melbourne Storm in Round 1.
Among them was fullback Lucas Borg, whose impressive performance in the opening game played a pivotal role in his team’s success.
“I was just in the right moments, you know, getting out the back of shape or popping up through the middle,” Borg explained.
His ability to read the game from the custodian position was important in helping the Steelers secure a solid win.
“I’ve just been working on my footy every day, trying to get better. The more you work on your craft, the more confidence you build,” he explained.

Although the win was a positive start, Borg acknowledged that a lack of trial matches meant match fitness would be a concern, especially towards the end of the game.
“It was tough towards the end; we hadn’t had any trials, and it was the first game of the season. But we’re looking to build on that, improve our fitness, and get better for the next match.” he said.
Borg, a product of the Shellharbour Stingrays, began playing at just five years old in the under-sixes.
The 18-year-old has been steadily rising through the Steelers ranks, progressing from the Harold Matthews Cup in 2023 to the SG Ball team in 2024-25.
Making Scenes
Adding to his growing rugby league resume, Borg represented NSW Combined Catholic Colleges at the 2024 Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships after making his international debut for Malta in 2023, where he played three matches and scored four tries.
Borg says honouring his family’s heritage on the international stage was one of his proudest moments.
“Putting on that jersey for my grandparents and dad’s heritage, it’s something I’ll cherish for the rest of my life,” he said.
As this weekend’s away clash against the Manly Sea Eagles approaches, Borg is focused on continuing to contribute to his team’s success.
“I’m looking forward to next week, it’s about getting involved more and continuing to improve my game.”
