Tigers Finish Strong to Down Steelers in Lisa Fiaola Cup

The Wests Tigers proved too strong in the second half, running out 18-6 winners over the Illawarra Steelers in their Lisa Fiaola Cup clash at Camden on Saturday after the scores were locked 0-0 at halftime.

The home side took a 4-0 lead early in the second half before the Steelers responded through hooker Jesse Rayner (pictured below), who darted over from close range before calmly converting her own try to level the scores at 6-6.

Despite the fightback, the Tigers took control for the remainder of the match. Building pressure through strong field position and repeat sets, they crossed for three unanswered tries to pull away and seal a convincing victory.

Kostovski Hat-Trick Powers Steelers to Crucial Tarsha Gale Cup Win

A captain’s performance from Kiara Kostovski (pictured) has led the Illawarra Steelers to an important victory, securing a 20-8 win over the Tigers and keeping their finals hopes alive.

The match began in an even fashion, with both sides trading tries inside the opening 10 minutes. Kostovski was first to strike for the Steelers, ensuring the scores were locked at 4-4 early.

Momentum began to swing the visitors’ way midway through the first half, with Seriah Palepale crashing over in the 22nd minute. Kostovski then added her second try before the break, giving the Steelers a handy 16-4 lead at halftime.

The Tigers came out firing in the second half, crossing first to close the gap to 16-8 and threaten a comeback.

However, Kostovski stepped up once again, finishing off a slick backline movement to complete her hat-trick and extend the lead to 20-8.

From there, the Steelers’ defence stood tall, shutting down repeated attacking raids from the Tigers over the final 20 minutes to secure their fourth win of the season and keep their finals campaign on track.

HMC Steelers Dominate in Woy Woy to Strengthen Finals Push

The Illawarra Steelers Harold Matthews side delivered a commanding performance on Saturday afternoon, running in seven tries to one in a dominant 40-6 victory over the Central Coast Roosters in Woy Woy.

With finals on the horizon, the comprehensive win provides a timely boost, further solidifying the Steelers’ semi-final credentials ahead of next week’s bye and a crucial final round showdown with the Warriors.

Illawarra set the tone early, controlling possession and field position to build pressure that quickly translated into the Steelers’ first try, scored by Kruz Efaraimo. A first-half double from Destin Tausala (pictured below), punctuated by a try to Kahuitara Te Ra Chase, ensured the visitors established a strong 22-6 lead by the break.

The second half was all one-way traffic, with Illawarra tightening their defence to shut the home side out completely. Tries to Preston Sager, who pounced on a loose ball from the Tigers, Pania Mahe and Ryan Coelho capped off an impressive team performance.

The Steelers will now enjoy a well-earned bye before turning their focus to a decisive final round clash, where a finals berth will be firmly in their sights.

SGB Steelers Fightback Falls Short Against Roosters

The Illawarra Steelers SG Ball side has gone down 30-18 to the Central Coast Roosters, despite a spirited second-half comeback that threatened to turn the match on its head.

The Roosters made a fast start on home turf, running in four unanswered tries in the opening half to take full control of the contest. Their clinical execution and ability to capitalise on opportunities left the Steelers chasing the game early, trailing 20-0 at the break.

Facing a significant deficit, the Steelers responded with renewed energy after halftime. Captain Beau Baldock led from the front, crossing for the visitors’ opening try to spark hope of a comeback.

However, the Roosters quickly steadied, adding another try to extend their lead to 24-6 and momentarily halt the Steelers’ momentum.

Refusing to go away, the Steelers surged again through Flynn O’Mara, who bagged back-to-back tries from smart dummy half bursts. With Jack Talbot (pictured) converting both, the margin was reduced to just six points, setting up a tense finish.

With the Steelers pressing hard and looking likely to close the gap further, a costly intercept proved decisive. The Roosters raced the length of the field to score, sealing the result and securing their first win of the season.
