Steelers Prepare For Home Stretch

The Illawarra Steelers undefeated Harold Matthews team is looking to secure a victory against the North Sydney Bears this Saturday at Collegians Sporting Complex. This match is their last home game and one of three remaining in the regular season.

Fullback Oliver Burton is eager to get back on the field for the final stretch after last week’s general bye.

“It feels great to be back. I’ve missed being out there with the boys,” Burton said.

“The break was good, but I’m definitely ready to get stuck into the last few games.”

Burton understands nerves are part of the game but he uses them as motivation, especially heading into the business end of the season.

“Before every match, there’s a bit of tension. But I try to use that nervous energy to stay focused and give my best on the field,” he said.

“We’ve got to trust each other, trust the system the coaches have put in place, and keep backing ourselves,” he said.

“That’s the key to success in these last few rounds.”

Creighton Meafou: No Room For Complacency

Co-captain Creighton Meafou emphasises that now is not the time to be complacent and is focused on maintaining high standards for the team.

“It’s been a great season so far, but now it’s all about staying consistent,” he said.

“We need to bring the same energy to training and games, no matter the opponent.”

After missing a week due to injury and a bye, Meafou can’t wait to get back into the thick of the action.

“The two-week break felt like forever,” he said with a laugh.

“I just wanted to get back out there with the boys and help the team finish strong.”

Meafou says the team is determined to make the most of their home ground advantage this weekend.

“The boys aren’t getting ahead of themselves. They’re just holding their ground here, training and knowing that every game is going to be a tough game”.

“We’ve worked hard all season, and now it’s about keeping our heads cool and playing to our potential,” he said.

“Every match counts, and we know we need to be at our best every time we step on the field.”

The Final Stretch

Burton admits there’s been a noticeable increase in camaraderie and teamwork among the group as the wins continued, but they understand there is still work to be done.

“The vibe in the team is great. Everyone is focused, and we know these last games will be tough,” Burton shared.

“But we’ve been working hard and ready to fight for every win.”

Meafou echoed this confidence, adding, “We’ve got a solid team. We know the competition is fierce, but if we keep playing our game and stay focused, we’ll get the results we want.”
