Steelers Show Grit as Matts Clinch Thriller

The Illawarra Steelers showed grit and flashes of brilliance across all four grades against the Parramatta Eels on Saturday, with the Harold Matthews side producing a stirring late comeback to secure the club’s lone victory of the round.

While results didn’t fall the Steelers’ way in every match, there were strong individual performances and valuable lessons as the junior representative season continues to build.

Lisa Fiaola Cup: Tough Lessons Against Clinical Eels

The Lisa Fiaola Cup U17s girls went down 48-4 in a challenging afternoon against a polished Parramatta outfit.

The Eels struck twice inside the opening 10 minutes to lead 10-0, but the Steelers responded with promise when Ruby Coote crossed for a converted try to close the gap to 10-6.

Parramatta capitalised on their momentum, adding two more tries to lead 20-4 at halftime. The second half was one-sided, with the visitors scoring six unanswered tries — four by winger Taylah Barr, who finished with five in a dominant individual performance for the hosts.

Tarsha Gale Cup: Defensive Lapse Proves Costly

The Tarsha Gale Cup U19s made a bright start but were unable to recover from a damaging 10-minute period in the first-half, falling to the Eels 22-12 after an 18-6 halftime deficit.

Centre Eli Young crossed in the fourth minute, finishing well in the corner. Charlotte Nicholson’s superb sideline conversion gave the Steelers an early lead.

A 10-minute defensive lapse allowed Parramatta to surge ahead with three quick tries and seize control. The Eels pushed their lead to 22-6 midway through the second half, but the Steelers rallied late — Ally Hamilton bursting out of dummy half to cross for a converted try, ensuring Illawarra claimed second-half honours.

Illawarra was left to rue missed opportunities but took encouragement from their ability to rally late.

Harold Matthews: Late Blitz Secures Stunning Comeback

The Harold Matthews Cup side delivered the highlight of the day, storming home with three tries in the final 10 minutes — including a last-gasp effort on the siren — to snatch a thrilling 22-18 victory.

Trailing 8-0 at halftime and 18-6 early in the second half after Hunter Fangupo crashed over, the Steelers seemed destined for defeat. Preston Ruiz sparked the comeback with a converted try after good lead up work from fullback Oliver Burton.

Centre Destin Tuasala scored from a neat Tyler Lewis ball to cut the margin to two with three minutes left, setting up a dramatic finish.

In the dying moments, Noah Fitzgerald delivered the match-winner, backing up Kahuitara Te Ra Chase, who regathered his own chip kick, capping a remarkable comeback and sealing a memorable win for the young Steelers.

SG Ball: Talbot Double Earns Gritty Draw

The SG Ball side continued their run of nail-biting matches, securing a hard-fought 20-all draw against the ladder-leading Eels and once again outplaying what their ladder position might suggest.

Fullback Jack Talbot was outstanding, crossing for a second-half double. Coming from 6-0 behind, Kapene Karaitiana opened the scoring for the Steelers in the eighth minute to make it 6-6, but Parramatta answered quickly, jumping out to an 18-6 lead after 20 minutes. Archie Wheeler’s crucial try before halftime narrowed the deficit to 18-12, keeping the Steelers in touch.

Parramatta surged to a 24-12 lead in the second half and appeared set for a fourth consecutive victory. But Steelers fullback Jack Talbot sparked a dramatic resurgence—first, by swooping on a loose ball deep in his own half and sprinting the length of the field to score in the 52nd minute.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, Talbot again delivered, capitalising on a clever Creighton Meafou kick to cross and level the scores, securing a gutsy draw for the Steelers.
