The Southern Corridor Open Women’s competition has a new headline after Helensburgh handed Corrimal their first defeat of the season, and their first loss to the Tiger Lilies in three years, with a hard-fought 12-10 victory in last week’s Round 11 clash.
In a match worthy of two genuine premiership contenders, the Tiger Lilies crossed for three tries to two to snap Corrimal’s remarkable unbeaten run and throw the race for the minor premiership wide open.
The result is a major statement from Helensburgh, a side that has quietly gathered momentum throughout the season . With only a handful of rounds remaining, the Southern Corridor competition has become a thrilling three-horse race.
Climbing The Ladder
Corrimal (9-1) remains on top of the ladder with 28 competition points despite the loss, while Collegians (8-2) are close behind on 26 points and Helensburgh (7-3) sits third on 24.
The ladder underscores the trio’s dominance this season, with Helensburgh’s nearest rivals trailing by a 12 competition points in fourth place.
For Corrimal, the defeat hardly tarnishes what has been an outstanding campaign. The Cougars have amassed an imposing points differential of +236 and remain favourites for the minor premiership.
Helensburgh, however, has demonstrated the defensive resolve and composure needed to mount a genuine title challenge. Holding the competition’s highest-scoring side to a single try is a feat few teams have managed, and one that will give the Tiger Lilies enormous confidence heading towards the finals.
