Women and Girls Tackle Grand Final Previews

Stingrays of Shellharbour upset premiership favourites Milton-Ulladulla 20-10 on their home turf last Sunday to advance to the inaugural Southern Corridor Open Women’s Tackle Grand Final. Scoring four tries to two, the visitors were too strong for the previously undefeated Bulldogs, who beat the Stingrays 8-0 earlier in the season.

Como Jannali did likewise to hosts Corrimal at Ziems Park with a 20-12 victory, scoring three tries to one. It was just the second loss of the season for the Cougars, who beat the Crocodiles 10-0 earlier in the regular season.

With the two heavyweights knocked out in week one of the finals, Stingrays will go into the Grand Final as premiership favourites, having defeated Como Jannali 20-12 back in Round 6. However, the Shire-based outfit will be full of confidence after their win over the Cougars away.

In the Under 18s, Collegians defeated the Cougars 18-16, setting up a Grand Final clash with Stingrays, who finished the regular season as Minor Premiers. The two sides have met twice this season, with Stingrays coming out on top 40-6 in Round 4 and 30-6 in the Qualifying semi-final two weeks ago.

Stingrays centre Mia-Rose Walsh (pictured earlier this season on the fly for the Illawarra Steelers in the Tarsha Gale Cup) poses a massive threat to Collies title chances, having scored a hat-trick on each occasion.

In a blockbuster day of women and girls rugby league, the grand finals will be proceeded by the South32 Illawarra Rugby League and South Coast Group 7 (merged comp) U14 and Under 16 Girls preliminary finals.
