Harrigan Cup: Round 5 Preview

The benchmark will be tested on Saturday afternoon when undefeated competition leaders Thirroul host defending premiers Wests at Thomas Gibson Park in the headline clash of Harrigan Cup Round 5.

The Butchers have surged to four straight wins to open the season and sent another strong message last weekend with a dominant 44-4 demolition of Dapto. Thirroul have looked the competition’s most complete side through the opening month, combining attacking flair with a defence that continues to frustrate opponents.

Wests, however, loom as the perfect measuring stick. The Devils escaped with a tense 28-24 victory over Sutherland Loftus last week after nearly surrendering a commanding 26-10 halftime lead.

Despite sitting outside the top two after already dropping two matches this season, the reigning premiers know a win on Saturday would immediately throw the premiership race wide open and close the gap on the ladder leaders.

Collegians will be out to build momentum when they host Dapto at Collegians Sporting Complex on Saturday. After suffering their first defeat of the year against Thirroul in Round 3, the Collie Dogs bounced back in style with a strong win over Corrimal last weekend to remain firmly in the top four conversation.

Dapto, meanwhile, will be searching for a response after a disappointing showing against the Butchers. The Canaries showed plenty of promise through the opening rounds but face another major challenge against a Collegians side eager to re-establish themselves as genuine title contenders.

Nakhle Backing Improving Pirates To Break Through

Sunday’s clash sees Sutherland Loftus return home to face Corrimal, with both sides desperate to keep pace with the competition leaders.

After four rounds without a win, there is still a growing sense that the Pirates are far from out of the fight in the 2026 Harrigan Cup season.

Under inaugural coach Paul Nakhle, the Pirates have proven they can match it with the competition’s heavyweights, pushing defending premiers Wests all the way in last weekend’s narrow 28-24 loss at Sutherland Oval.

While the results column is yet to reflect the effort and improvement shown by the side, Nakhle believes his squad is beginning to find its footing in one of the toughest local competitions in the state.

“The standard has been very good, exactly as I expected,” Nakhle said.

“The teams are very physical and full of experienced players, so each week presents a really good challenge for our players.”

The Pirates have shown plenty of resilience throughout the opening month, fighting their way back into games after slow starts. Against Wests, they recovered from a 26-10 halftime deficit and scored five tries to four, only to fall agonisingly short.

Looking To Turn Close Calls Into Competition Points

For Nakhle, the biggest focus heading into Round 5 is improving the opening stages of matches.

“Our starts to games are what’s hurting us,” he said.

“Poor completions, poor discipline and not being patient with the ball results in low possession. We’ve given teams big starts every week and you can’t afford to do that in this competition.

“We’re very conscious of what we need to do, but for various reasons we haven’t got it right yet. It’s definitely something we need to address quickly.

“One thing for certain is we don’t give up. We compete until the end and that’s been really pleasing.”

The Pirates have also dealt with regular changes to their squad during the opening month of the season, something Nakhle says was always expected.

“Player movement was always going to be part of it for us,” he said.

“We just need to make sure we don’t overcomplicate what we’re trying to achieve and focus on the fundamentals and effort areas.

“But every change creates an opportunity for someone else to step up and represent the Pirates, and that’s been exciting to watch.”

Ready To Reward Loyal Fans With First Victory

Despite sitting winless after four rounds, support around the club continues to build, with strong crowds turning out at Sutherland Oval each week.

“The support has been fantastic,” Nakhle said.

“The Pirates have a really passionate and loyal supporter base. They mean a lot to the players and staff and we’d love to get that first win for them, hopefully this week.”

Standing in their way this Sunday will be a dangerous Corrimal Cougars outfit desperate to bounce back after last weekend’s loss to Collegians.

Nakhle expects the battle through the middle to be decisive.

“Our main focus is us and making sure we improve our starts to games,” he said.

“But looking at who Corrimal have in their pack, we’re expecting a really physical battle in the middle and our forwards will certainly welcome that challenge.”

The Round 5 clash shapes as a crucial opportunity for both sides, with the Pirates chasing a breakthrough victory and the Cougars looking to stay in touch with the competition leaders.
