After the completion of the opening leg of the 2026 Harrigan Cup, the competition has already delivered on its promise of being one of the most competitive regional Rugby League competitions in New South Wales.
The first five rounds have featured major upsets, dramatic finishes, emerging contenders and a significant statement from several clubs as the premiership race begins to take shape. With a general bye scheduled for the upcoming long weekend, let’s take a look at the season so far.
The biggest storyline of the opening five rounds has been the rise of the Thirroul Butchers. After entering the season as a potential improver, the Butchers won their first four matches and established themselves as the benchmark of the competition before suffering their first defeat against the defending premiers in Round 5.
Meanwhile, Wests reminded the competition why they are the reigning champions, while Collegians have remained firmly in premiership contention despite some inconsistency. Corrimal and Dapto have shown enough quality to challenge any side on their day, while competition newcomers Sutherland-Loftus have been more competitive than their winless record suggests.
Ladder Snapshot After Five Rounds

- Wests Devils (3-2)
- Corrimal Cougars (2-3)

Thirroul Butchers: The Pace Setters
Thirroul have been the biggest success story of the season so far. The Butchers opened with four consecutive victories, defeating Sutherland, Corrimal, Collegians and Dapto while playing an aggressive, high-tempo style built around strong completions and attacking flair.
Their unbeaten run came to an end in Round 5 when Wests produced a powerful 42-16 victory at Thomas Gibson Park, exposing a few areas that will need refinement heading into the second leg.
However, that defeat should not overshadow what has been an outstanding opening month. The Butchers have proven they can beat every major contender and have transformed from a finals hopeful into a genuine premiership threat.
Collegians: Quietly Building
Last year’s minor premiers and grand finalists have again positioned themselves near the top of the ladder. Collegians opened the season with an impressive victory over Wests before winning three of their next four matches.
Their only defeat came against Thirroul in Round 3, but they responded strongly by defeating Corrimal and Dapto to sit in second position, with a game in hand. While they perhaps haven’t generated the same headlines as the Butchers, the Collie Dogs continue to display the depth and professionalism that made them a premiership contender in 2025.
Wests Devils: The Defending Premiers Strike Back
The defending premiers endured an unusually rocky start by their standards, losing two of their opening three matches including an upset defeat to Corrimal. After escaping with a narrow victory over the Pirates in Round 4, the Devils produced arguably the most impressive performance of the season when they dismantled previously unbeaten Thirroul 42-16 in Round 5.
The performance reminded everyone that premiership-winning experience still matters. Wests now appear to have rediscovered their rhythm and loom as a major threat heading into the middle part of the season.
Corrimal Cougars: Dangerous But Frustrating
Corrimal’s season can best be described as a mixture of promise and frustration.
After narrow losses to Dapto and Thirroul in the opening two rounds, the Cougars produced one of the biggest results of the year when they upset Wests in Round 3. Collies got the better of them in disappointing performance in Round 4 before producing a convincing win over Sutherland in Round 5.
Their recruitment drive during the off-season has clearly improved the squad and they possess enough talent to challenge every team in the competition.
Despite showing genuine finals-quality football at times, the issue has been their inconsistency preventing them from establishing momentum.
Dapto Canaries: Competitive But Inconsistent
Dapto have also shown enough to suggest they will remain firmly in the finals race but have lacked consistency.
Victories over Corrimal and Sutherland highlighted their attacking potential, while a narrow loss to Wests demonstrated they are capable of matching the competition’s leading teams. However, the heavy Round 4 defeat against Thirroul exposed some defensive vulnerabilities.
Under captain-coach Tom Freebairn, the Canaries have generally been competitive every week, but they need to start converting strong performances against the top sides into competition points.
Sutherland-Loftus Pirates: Better Than Their Record Suggests
The newcomers remain winless after five rounds, but their performances deserve far more respect than the ladder position indicates.
The Pirates have pushed several contenders deep into games, including a four-point loss to Wests after trailing 26-10 at halftime. They have shown competitiveness and a willingness to fight until the final whistle despite facing the challenge of entering an established competition.
The next step is learning how to start matches better and convert competitive periods into victories. If they continue their current trajectory, their maiden Harrigan Cup win should not be far away.
Mid-Season Outlook
After one complete leg, the competition appears to have developed three distinct tiers. Thirroul, Collegians and Wests have emerged as the leading premiership contenders, while Corrimal and Dapto remain genuine finals threats capable of upsetting anyone.
Sutherland-Loftus are yet to register a victory but have shown enough to suggest they could influence the finals race by taking points off more fancied opponents.
Most importantly, the opening five rounds have reinforced what makes the Harrigan Cup unique. Every team has already demonstrated they can compete, there have been very few blowouts, and virtually every week has produced meaningful contests.
With two legs remaining, the premiership race remains wide open and the second third of the season shapes as a crucial period in determining who will be best positioned for a finals assault.
Round 6 gets underway on Saturday, 13 June after the long weekend.
