Round 2 of the Harrigan Cup shapes as a defining early-season marker, blending fierce rivalries, premiership yardsticks and emerging contenders into a weekend of high-stakes clashes.
Battle of the Beaches Set to Ignite Again as Butchers and Cougars Renew Coastal Rivalry

The annual “Battle of the Beaches” returns with plenty of unfinished business as Thirroul and Corrimal prepare to write the next chapter in one of the Illawarra’s fiercest coastal rivalries.
Corrimal’s star trio—Ben Murdoch-Masila, Reuben Porter, and Ray Faitala-Mariner—will take centre stage in the Cougars’ first home game of the year at Ziems Park. Meanwhile, Thirroul will aim for back-to-back victories following their impressive opening-round win on the road against Sutherland-Loftus.
Last season delivered a gripping three-game series between the beachside neighbours, with Thirroul edging the head-to-head two wins to one—but only just. Across all three encounters, a total of just 10 points separated the sides, with two matches decided by a nail-biting two-point margin.
The Butchers struck first in Round 4 with an 18–12 victory, before Corrimal responded in Round 9 with a thrilling 24–22 win. Thirroul reclaimed bragging rights in Round 14, holding on for a 16–14 result in another tight finish.
But while Thirroul may have claimed the ledger, it was Corrimal who ultimately had the final say.
The Cougars surged when it mattered most, securing a long-awaited finals berth, while the Butchers were left watching from the sidelines—a twist that only adds further edge to this already heated rivalry.
In the Battle of the Beaches, history says one thing: don’t expect anything easy.

Can Dapto Close the Gap on Defending Champs Wests?

Another familiar rivalry takes centre stage on Saturday as Dapto and Wests lock horns again, renewing a contest that proved one of the defining matchups of last season.
Across three regular season meetings, the ledger sat at two wins to one in favour of the Devils—but the margins told a deeper story. Wests opened the account with a 22–6 win in Round 5, before Dapto fired back in Round 10 with an impressive 24–14 victory. The Devils reclaimed the edge in Round 15, grinding out a 14–4 result in typical fashion.
But it was their finals clash that truly defined the rivalry.
In Week 1 of the Finals, Wests held off a fast-finishing Dapto outfit to escape with a narrow 24–22 victory—a result that proved pivotal in their run to back-to-back premierships.
Despite the loss, Dapto’s performances across the season showed they were anything but outclassed. In fact, few sides pushed the eventual premiers as consistently or as closely.
Now in 2026, the stage is set for another chapter.
Wests return as the benchmark of the competition, battle-hardened and proven under pressure. But Dapto arrive with belief—and the knowledge that they’ve already shown they can match it with the best.
Expect a contest built on physicality, discipline and moments that matter.
Because if last season proved anything, it’s this: there’s very little separating these two sides.

Collegians Face Pirates Test in Round 2 Showdown

After defeating defending premiers Wests in Round 1, Collegians will look to reinforce their status as early-season benchmarks when they take on competition newcomers Sutherland-Loftus in a compelling Round 2 clash.
After a stellar 2025 campaign that saw them claim the minor premiership, losing just two games all season, Collegians went within minutes of ultimate glory, falling in an extra-time classic to the eventual premiers. Six months on, they’ve wasted no time picking up where they left off, opening their 2026 account with an impressive 14–4 win over Wests to again put the competition on notice.
But this week presents a different kind of challenge.
Enter Sutherland-Loftus, the unknown quantity with plenty of upside.
The Pirates may be new to the competition, but they arrive with expectation and intent. While their Round 1 outing ended in a 30–16 loss to a red-hot Thirroul side, there were enough signs to suggest they won’t take a backward step against anyone this season.
For Collegians, it’s a test of consistency against a side with nothing to lose. For the Pirates, it’s an opportunity to make an early statement.
