Illawarra South Coast suffered a heartbreaking 31–30 defeat to the Macarthur Wests Tigers in the Open Men’s Country Championship at Centenary Field, Albion Park on Saturday, with a last-minute field goal ending the Dragons hopes of progressing in the knockout competition.
With scores locked late in the contest, Tigers playmaker Daniel Payne stepped up in the 79th minute to slot a decisive one-pointer, cruelly denying the Dragons after a spirited performance in front of their home supporters.
In a thrilling encounter, both teams crossed for five tries apiece and were perfect from the tee with five conversions each, leaving Payne’s field goal as the only point of difference in a game that swung dramatically across both halves.
The Dragons controlled much of the first half and looked in command heading into the break with an 18–6 lead. Their attack clicked early, building pressure and capitalising on opportunities to take a deserved advantage into halftime after converted tries to Peni Misinale, Zach Herring and Khalil Rahme.
Macarthur Wests Tigers responded strongly after the interval, gradually working their way back into the contest with four consecutive tries to take a handy 30-18 lead.
The Dragons continued to fight scoring back-to-back tries to James Lee and Kristian Williams as the match built towards a dramatic finish.
With the scores tied in the closing stages, both sides searched for the play that could decide the contest.
That moment arrived with just over a minute remaining when Payne calmly slotted the field goal to edge the Tigers ahead 31–30 and secure their passage into the semi-finals.
