Applications are now open for Illawarra Rugby League’s 2023 scholarship program, offered with our Education Partner UOW College Australia.
“The Steelers are very proud of our association with UOW College,” said Illawarra Steelers Deputy Chairman Sean O’Connor.
“We’re entering our sixth year of the Scholarship program, and already we’ve assisted some of our future academic and sporting stars to begin their careers.”
First launched in 2018, past winners include Brielle Luccitti [Certificate III in Fitness], Teagan Berry [Main picture, Diploma of Nursing], Melissa Spero [Certificate IV in Fitness] and Nat Blud [University Preparation Program].

Brielle, 18, completed her Certificate III in Fitness earlier this year and is now enrolled in the Certificate IV in Fitness, which starts this month.
“I have always been interested in fitness, so it has been fantastic for someone like me, who didn’t enjoy school. There is so much help and support, and I have learned much more than I thought I would.”
Berry is a former Steelers’ Tarsha Gale premiership winner who has since gone on to represent the Under 19s NSW Women’s Origin team, the inaugural Steelers Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team, and the St George Illawarra Dragons in the NRLW.
Meanwhile, Spero (pictured right) is the Corrimal Cougars Women’s team coach and the inaugural Australian Schoolgirls coach.
Life changing
“Our IRL scholarship is ideal for outstanding young people like Brielle, Teagan, and Melissa who have a career pathway they want to pursue,” says UOW College General Manager Felix Lanceley.
“As well as pathway programs to UOW, we offer vocational courses that can lead to a career in Fitness, Nursing, Aged Care, and Disability Support, so this scholarship program can open up an exciting life change for the winner.
Each year UOW College Australia awards a scholarship to a player or volunteer affiliated with Illawarra Rugby League to study an eligible UOW College Australia program to encourage and assist the scholarship recipient in achieving their educational goals.
The scholarship (up to $10,000 in course fees) is open to all participants over 16 years of age – players, officials, and volunteers – involved in Illawarra Rugby League competitions.
