You would think following in the footsteps of a former Steeler, NSW, and Australian representative is a hard act, but Halle Barrett, daughter of Trent Barrett, who played 45 games for the club in the mid-90s, is taking it all in her stride.
Currently trotting out for the Steelers Lisa Fiaola Cup Under 17’s, the Shellharbour Stingrays junior says rugby league is a great way to connect with her father and older brother Bohden, who is also donning the scarlet and white with the Steelers SG Ball Under 19’s.
“Dad helps me out a bit. It’s kind of a bonding opportunity for us,” Barrett says.
“We talk about where I want to go in footy, and when I’m getting a bit nervous, he is always there. It’s good to have Dad in the picture, really.”
Backyard rules
While her father has been a significant influence, Halle also credits Bohden for toughening her with tackling drills in the backyard.
“He is the only boy in the family, so he has got to have one tackling partner at least, so I guess I was the victim,” she says with a laugh.
“We rip into each other, but I’m grateful for him, especially as he drives me to training and home, too. ”
With two wins from two starts, Barrett says there is an air of confidence around the team heading into their Round 3 clash with the North Sydney Bears this weekend.
“It’s good to get in there and get the wins with the girls, and we’re keen to get on with the season.
“Now that we’re into our third game and all gelling together, everyone’s excited for the season to come.”
Stepping up
Happy with her early season form, Barrett scored her first try in Steelers colours in last week’s 12-10 win over the Central Coast Roosters.
“It’s good to get a try early; that’s built my confidence, and now I’m excited to get on with the season.
“Hopefully, I can get over the line a few more times and bring it back for the Steelers.”
Currently plying her trade in the centres, Barrett has noticed the step up in level on the representative scene in her third season of rugby league.
“Everyone is very good defensively. When you come across teams at this level, you can tell the intensity changes from club footy to a rep team like this.
“Everyone’s fit, everyone can defend, everyone’s quick. We all want to win for each other.”
Keeping it in the family
And there could be a third family member in the picture soon, too, if Halle has her way.
“I’ve got two sisters, Romy and Mia, who both play netball, but I am the first girl in my family to play league.
“Mia looks up to me a little bit. She started league tag this year, and I think rugby union, but I’m trying to get her into league.”
If Halle gets her way, those backyard tackling drills just got a new recruit.
