Steelers ‘Veteran’ Lily Rogan Named Captain

The Illawarra Steelers’ 2023 Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership Player Of The Year, Lily Rogan, has been appointed captain for the 2024 season.

“It’s a real honour for me that the coaching staff have appointed me to the position,” Rogan said.

“It was a bit surprising. I didn’t expect it, but it’s pretty surreal, and I’m very fortunate to have the role.

Still just 20, Rogan could be considered a veteran heading into her sixth year in Steelers colours, having started in the club’s Lisa Fiaola development program in 2019.

“I’m happy that I have had the opportunity to progress through the Illawarra Pathways. I like keeping things local; I’m a one-club person.”

“I want to achieve as much as I can at one club and bring as much success as possible to the Steelers.”

Pathway To Success

The Milton Ulladulla Bulldogs junior has yet to commence training, but after examining potential teammates at the club’s first trial in February, she expects to see a mix of old and new faces, with the club putting its faith in its pathway systems.

“I’ve had a quick look over the squad list. I’ve played with a few of the girls and against a few.

“There are some new faces and some younger girls coming up from Tarsha Gale, so we look like a pretty strong squad.

“We will build on that in the preseason, and hopefully, come round one, we can get off to a flying start.”

Lofty Goals

While Rogan is yet to pick up an NRLW contract for 2024 it’s one of several goals on her bucket list after starring for the Steelers in their inaugural season.

“Obviously, everyone’s end goal is NRLW.

“I’d like to secure a contract, learn more, and grow as a player.”

Rogan has also set lofty goals for her team after a stellar 2023, which saw them finish second in the regular season and fall one game short of the Grand Final.

“Ideally, go one better than last year. Win the comp and bring the trophy home.”
